When Will The National Drug Shortage End?

by EMP Editor on June 28, 2012

The national drug shortage causes challenges daily for paramedics and ambulance services. Drug manufactures have an assortment of reasons for the shortages including increases in demand, material shortages, manufacturing delays, and in some cases suspended manufacturing.

A critical aspect in a life-saving emergency can be a drug’s packaging. In the event of a heart attack, an Epinephrine prefilled syringe is much more convenient than having to mix medicines together to create the perfect dosage.

How is the national drug shortage affecting your department? Are you able to work with your local hospital? When reordering supplies do you ask if there’s a comparable substitute?
